In short
Find out why they didn’t buy, wait until that reason might have changed, and come back with something new — a price, a model, a better time. Most lost sales are “not now”, not “never”, and a short, specific message one, three or six months later is often all it takes to reopen the conversation.
- Write down why, the day you lose it.
- Match the wait to the reason.
- Come back with something new, not “just checking in”.
Lost isn’t the same as no
Most customers who walk away haven’t said no for ever. They said no to that price, that model or that month. The salesperson who comes back at the right time, politely, often finds someone who is now ready — and who remembers being treated well.
Step 1: write down why, straight away
The day you lose a sale, note the reason while you still know it:
- Price — too expensive, or a better offer elsewhere.
- Timing — not ready yet, waiting for a bonus, a lease ending.
- Bought elsewhere.
- Went quiet — stopped answering, no reason given.
A month later you won’t remember, and the reason decides everything that follows.
Step 2: match the wait to the reason
- Timing: come back just before the date they gave — often one to three months.
- Price: when something changes — an offer, a cheaper model, the end of the month.
- Went quiet: one gentle message after a few weeks, then try again in a few months.
- Bought elsewhere: six months or more — their next purchase, an add-on, or a friend who needs one.
Step 3: open with a reason, not “just checking in”
“Just checking in” asks them to do the work. Give them something worth replying to:
“Hi Emily — in spring you said the timing wasn’t right. There’s a new offer on the Nexon EV this month. Worth a quick look?”
One message, one reason, one easy question. If it’s still no, thank them and set a longer wait.
Old customers who already bought
People who bought from you before are the easiest to win back, because they already trust you. A check-in a month after the sale, a birthday message, a note when a warranty or lease is ending — these keep you the person they think of. While they’re happy, ask for referrals.

Common questions
How do you win back lost customers?
Note why they didn’t buy, wait until that reason may have changed, and come back with something new and specific rather than “just checking in”.
How long should I wait before contacting a lost lead again?
Match it to the reason: one to three months for timing, when something changes for price, and six months or more if they bought elsewhere.
What do I say to win back a customer?
Their name, the reason they gave last time, what has changed, and one easy question such as “worth a quick look?”
Is there an app that reminds me to try lost leads again?
Yes. In Clinch, mark a lead Not sold, pick why and choose 1, 3 or 6 months; on the day, it comes back on Home.
