The basic formula
Commission = Sale price × (Rate ÷ 100)
Example: a car sells for $29,550 and you earn 2%. 29,550 × 0.02 = $591.
Fixed commission
Some jobs pay a flat amount per sale — say $300 a car or $50 a policy. Then commission is just the number of sales × the fixed amount. Ten sales at $300 = $3,000.
Split deals
If two of you share a sale 50/50, work out the full commission first, then take your share: $591 × 50% = $295.50.
On the sale price, or on the profit?
Read your pay plan carefully. Commission on gross profit uses (sale price − cost) instead of the sale price. A $29,550 sale that cost the dealer $27,000 has $2,550 of profit; 20% of that is $510.

Rate = Commission ÷ Sale price × 100
If you earned $591 on $29,550, your rate was 591 ÷ 29,550 × 100 = 2%.
