In short

Say thank you soon and say what they did: “You cleared our whole driveway before work, thank you.” A short handwritten note does most of the work. Add a small, useful gift if you like (baking, a hot drink, a bag of ice melt), offer a favour back, and in Edmonton or Calgary you can give them a free Snow Angel certificate from the City. If they keep doing it all winter, ask whether they’d like to be paid.

Ways to thank a neighbour who shovels

What to write in a thank-you note to a neighbour

Say what they did, when, and what it meant. Sign with your name and house number so they know who it’s from. A few to copy:

If you don’t know who did it, a note taped inside your window (“Thank you to whoever shovelled our walk!”) usually finds them.

Thank-you gift ideas for a neighbour who shovels snow

Keep it small; a big gift can make a kind favour feel like a job. Ideas that land well:

For kids who shovelled, check with a parent first; a thank-you card and a treat they’re allowed is usually perfect.

Should you pay a neighbour for shovelling your driveway?

If it was a one-off favour, thanks and a small gift is the norm. If they’re clearing your driveway after every snowfall, it’s fair to ask: “You’ve been doing this all winter, can I pay you, or is there something I can do for you?” Some will say no; some, especially teens saving up, will be glad to agree a price per visit.

If you’d rather have it arranged up front, our guide on how to find someone to shovel snow covers what to agree. Shovelling help is also about the bylaw: the Edmonton and Calgary sidewalk snow removal bylaw guide has the deadlines, and snow removal for seniors lists the programs that can help.

Snow Angel certificates in Edmonton and Calgary

Neither city keeps a list of Snow Angels or matches people up; the helpers are simply neighbours.

Where this comes from

Snow Angel details checked on 4 November 2026 against the City of Calgary’s Snow Angels page and the City of Edmonton’s residential sidewalk snow and ice page. Programs and dates can change, so check those pages before you rely on them. The notes and gift ideas are our own suggestions.

Neighbr on iPhone
  1. Ask for a hand. “Shovel my sidewalk and driveway after snowfalls this winter” — set a price, ask for offers, or say it’s a favour.
  2. Pick a neighbour. Compare offers, ratings and how often they’ve helped; a private chat opens once you pick.
  3. Say thanks when it’s done. Leave stars and thank-you stickers like “Lifesaver” or “Right on time”, and share a thank-you card.
  4. Ask again next storm. The same helper can keep your walk clear all winter.

Neighbr is free with no fees, and never handles money — you settle up directly. Need a hand? Ask your neighbour.

Common questions

How do you thank your neighbor for shoveling?

Thank them in person the same day and say exactly what they cleared, then leave a short handwritten note. A small gift (baking, a hot drink, a bag of ice melt) or a favour back is a nice extra. In Edmonton and Calgary you can also give them a free Snow Angel certificate from the City.

What to write in a thank you note to a neighbor?

Say what they did, when, and what it meant to you, then sign with your name and house number. For example: “Thank you for shovelling our sidewalk this morning! You saved me half an hour before work. — Priya, no. 12.”

What is a good thank you gift for a neighbor?

Something small and useful: homemade baking (ask about allergies), a coffee or a local coffee-shop gift card, a bag of ice melt, warm gloves, or something you know they love. Your time, like returning the favour, often means the most.

Should I pay my neighbor for shoveling my driveway?

For a one-off favour, thanks and a small gift is normal. If they clear your driveway after every snowfall, ask whether they’d like to be paid or would rather you return the favour, and agree a price if they say yes.

How do I recognize a Snow Angel in Calgary or Edmonton?

Both cities have a free Snow Angel certificate to print and give your helper. In Calgary you can also make a 311 request and the City mails a certificate to you to pass on, during its campaign that typically runs December to mid-April.

Is Neighbr free?

Yes — no fees for asking, offering or messaging, and you can say thanks with stars, stickers and a shareable thank-you card.
