In short
When pay lands: set aside the bills due before the next payday, move savings out straight away, and split what’s left into weekly spending. A bill calendar tied to your paydays is what stops the surprises.
- Bills due before next payday come first.
- Pay yourself second — automatically.
- What’s left is spending money.
1. List every bill with its due date
Rent, phone, internet, insurance, subscriptions, car payment, card minimums. Note which payday each one falls after.
2. Split bills by paycheque
If you’re paid twice a month, give each paycheque the bills due before the next one. Rent often needs half from each.
3. Pay yourself next
Move savings the day you’re paid — even $50. Money that stays in chequing gets spent.
4. Spending money, by the week
Divide what’s left by the weeks until next payday. Groceries, gas and fun come from that number.
5. Check in each payday
Ten minutes: what came in, what went out, did you stay under. Adjust next time instead of giving up.
How to do it with VaultFlow

- Add income and bills once. One + for money in or out — set it to repeat and it becomes a bill or regular income.
- See what’s due. Everything due this week and later, with a reminder one to three days before.
- Set a budget on each category. Spending against a monthly limit on Home; refunds lower spending instead of counting as income.
- Check the month. Reports show whether you saved, where the money went, and bills versus everyday spending.

How should I budget my paycheck?

How do I budget if I’m paid every two weeks?
Assign each bill to the paycheque before its due date; two months a year you get a third paycheque to save.
What percentage of my paycheck should I save?
A common guide is 20% (the 50/30/20 rule), but any regular amount is a start.
Is there a free budget app without a subscription?
