What Inkwell is for

Inkwell is a free WordPress blog and magazine theme built for readability. It pairs a large featured-post grid with a comfortable 68-character measure, supports light and dark colour schemes out of the box, and loads no external fonts or scripts. Ideal for personal blogs, news sites and editorial publications.

What’s in it

  • Featured-post grid on the homepage, switchable to a classic list
  • Right sidebar, left sidebar or no sidebar — set per site in the Customizer
  • Reading-optimised 68-character measure and a built-in reading-time estimate
  • Light and dark colour schemes that follow the visitor’s system setting
  • Full block editor support with matching editor styles
  • No Google Fonts, no jQuery, no external requests of any kind

Installing it

  1. Download the zipinkwell.zip, 95 KB. Do not unzip it.
  2. In WordPress, go to Appearance → Themes → Add New → Upload Theme.
  3. Choose the zip and press Install Now, then Activate.
  4. Set it up under Appearance → Customize — colours, menus, layout and the front-page sections all live there.

Installing by FTP instead? Unzip it and upload the inkwell folder into wp-content/themes/, then activate it from Appearance → Themes.

Frequently asked

Can I use Inkwell on a client site?

Yes. It is licensed GPL v2 or later, so you can use it on any number of sites, personal or commercial, and modify it however you like.

Does it work with Gutenberg blocks?

Yes. Inkwell ships a theme.json palette, supports wide and full-width blocks, and loads matching editor styles so the admin preview looks like the front end.

How do I turn the sidebar off?

Appearance → Customize → Layout → Sidebar position → None. You can also hide it on single posts only.

Is it fast?

Inkwell loads one stylesheet and about 2 KB of JavaScript. There are no web fonts to download and no external requests, so it starts rendering as soon as the HTML arrives.

The same promise on every theme here

Genuinely free, including commercially

WordPress themes are GPL v2+, Shopify themes are MIT. Either way: use it on client sites, change it, rename it, sell the site you built with it. There is no “pro” version being withheld and no licence key.

No account, no email, no upsell

The download button is a download button. We do not ask who you are and there is nothing to unsubscribe from afterwards.

Nothing phones home

No Google Fonts, no analytics, no external requests of any kind. Everything the theme needs is inside the zip, which is also why they are small.

Not a page-builder trap

Every theme works with the block editor and the Customizer alone. None of them require a plugin to look like the demo.
