Jotter Support

Answers to the things people ask most. If yours is not here, email us — a real person replies, usually within a day.

Need a hand?

Email info@thebighead.ca and tell us your iPhone or iPad model, your iOS version, and what you expected to happen. That is usually enough for us to reproduce it straight away.

Writing

How do I start a checklist?

Type [] and a space at the start of a line. Or hold the New note button and choose Checklist. Tap a box to tick it; tap it again to untick it.

Headings, bullets, bold and highlights

Type # and a space for a heading and - and a space for a bullet. Select a word and use the format bar above the keyboard — or hold the word — for bold, italic, underline, strikethrough and the highlighter.

Where is the title?

The first line of a note is its title. There is nothing else to fill in, and nothing to save: Jotter saves as you type.

Handwriting

How do I write with Apple Pencil?

Hold the New note button and choose a handwritten page, or add a drawing to any note. The page grows as you write. Choose blank, lined, grid or dotted paper from the Paper menu.

Drawing with a finger

Drawing with a finger is on from the start. On iPad, turn off Draw with finger in the drawing’s More menu to keep your palm from leaving marks while you write with Apple Pencil.

Can Jotter turn my handwriting into text?

Yes — More → Convert to text in a drawing. Your handwriting is also read in the background so that search can find it. Both happen on your device.

Search

Search does not find a word in a photo or a voice note yet

Jotter reads new photos, scans, drawings and recordings in the background, a moment after you add them. Give it a few seconds with the app open. Voice notes are only transcribed when your device can do it on the device for your language — see the next question.

My voice note has no transcript

Jotter transcribes voice notes on your device only, and never sends audio to a server. If your device cannot recognise your language on the device, the recording is kept but not transcribed. Check that Speech Recognition is allowed in Settings → Privacy & Security → Speech Recognition → Jotter.

Sync

My devices are not syncing
  1. Check both devices are signed in to the same iCloud account: Settings → your name.
  2. Check iCloud is allowed for Jotter: Settings → your name → iCloud → Saved to iCloud → See All.
  3. Make sure both devices have a network connection and open the app on each — sync happens in the background, but opening the app prompts it straight away.
  4. Give it a minute. Apple’s sync service batches changes and is not instant.
Does Jotter work without iCloud?

Yes. If you are not signed in to iCloud, the app keeps working normally on that device — you simply do not get sync between devices. Nothing is lost.

Where are my notes actually stored?

On your device, and — if iCloud is on — in your own private iCloud database. There is no Jotter server. We cannot see your notes, which also means we cannot recover them for you. See the privacy policy.

Deleting and restoring

I deleted a note by mistake

Tap Undo in the message that appears as it goes. After that, open Recently Deleted in the chips above your notes (in the sidebar on iPad), open the note and choose Restore. Deleted notes wait there for thirty days.

Locked notes

Open a note’s More menu and choose Lock with Face ID. A locked note opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode — the same passcode you use to unlock your phone, so there is no separate password to forget. Locking hides a note inside Jotter; it is not encryption.

Getting your notes out

How do I export everything?

Settings → Export all notes writes every note as a Markdown text file, in folders named after yours, with the photos, drawings, scans and recordings beside each note. Save it to Files or send it wherever you like.

How do I share or print a single note?

Open the note’s More menu and choose Export as PDF or Export as text, or use Share at the top of the note.

Widgets, Siri and shortcuts

How do I add a Jotter widget?

Touch and hold an empty spot on your Home Screen, tap Edit → Add Widget, and search for Jotter. There is a New note tile, a Recent notes list in two sizes, and New note for the Lock Screen and Control Center.

What can I say to Siri?

“Jot down in Jotter” — Siri asks what to write and saves it as a new note. “New note in Jotter” opens a blank one, and “Add to a note in Jotter” adds a line to a note you already have.

Price and tips

Is anything in Jotter paid?

No. Every feature is free, with no subscription and no ads. Buy me a coffee in Settings is an optional tip for the person who makes the app. It unlocks nothing and does not renew.

Refunds

All purchases go through Apple, so refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. We are not able to issue them directly, and nothing in the app changes either way.

Deleting your data

How do I erase everything?

Delete the app from your device, then remove its iCloud data in Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Jotter. That erases everything the app has created. Because we hold no copy, nothing remains anywhere else.
