Who we are

Kalend is made by The Big Head, a software studio based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. You can reach us at info@thebighead.ca.

What Kalend stores, and where

Kalend stores the tasks, projects, appointments, habits, habit completions and journal entries you create. This data is written to a database on your device. If you are signed in to iCloud and have iCloud Drive enabled, Apple's CloudKit service replicates that database to your other devices using your own private iCloud storage.

• The data is held in your private iCloud database, not ours. We have no access to it and no ability to read it.
• We operate no servers, no databases and no backend of any kind for Kalend.
• If you are not signed in to iCloud, Kalend simply works locally on that device.

Apple's handling of iCloud data is governed by the Apple Privacy Policy.

Your calendar

Kalend can show events from the calendars already on your iPhone beside your tasks. This is off until you tap Show my calendar events, either in Kalend’s Settings → Calendars or on the Calendar tab’s welcome card, and iOS asks for your permission at that moment. Kalend never asks for calendar access on its own.

• Calendar events are read live from the system calendar each time they are displayed.
• Kalend never copies your events into its own database and never transmits them anywhere.
• Appointments you add in Kalend are Kalend’s own records, stored with the rest of your data as described above. They need no calendar permission.
• You can withdraw calendar access at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Calendars.

Apple Reminders

Kalend can copy your open reminders from Apple’s Reminders app into its To-Do list. This happens only when you tap Bring in my Reminders in Kalend’s Settings → Apple Reminders, and iOS asks for your permission at that moment. Kalend never asks for Reminders access on its own.

• Each reminder’s title, notes, due date and priority are copied once into Kalend, as ordinary tasks stored with the rest of your data as described above.
• Kalend never changes, completes or deletes anything in Reminders, and never transmits your reminders anywhere.
• To avoid copying the same reminder twice, Kalend keeps a list of the reminders it has already copied. That list stays on the device.
• You can withdraw Reminders access at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Reminders. Tasks already copied stay in Kalend until you delete them.

Talk to write (microphone and speech recognition)

In a journal entry you can tap the microphone and speak instead of typing. Kalend asks for microphone and speech recognition permission the first time you tap it, and never otherwise.

• Speech is turned into text by Apple’s on-device speech recognition. Kalend requires on-device recognition, so your voice is not sent to Apple or to us. If your iPhone has no on-device model for your language, the feature says so and does not work, rather than sending audio anywhere.
• The microphone is used only while the microphone button shows it is listening. No audio is recorded or saved.
• Only the words you keep become part of your journal entry, stored like the rest of your data as described above.
• You can withdraw either permission at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone, or → Speech Recognition.

Notifications

Alerts you set in Kalend are scheduled locally by iOS on your device. They are not sent through any push service operated by us and their contents never leave your phone.

What we do not do

• We do not collect analytics or usage statistics.
• We do not use advertising identifiers, and Kalend contains no advertising.
• We do not include any third-party SDK, tracker or analytics library. Kalend is built entirely on Apple frameworks.
• We do not sell, rent or share personal information, because we do not receive any.
• We do not create a profile of you or track you across apps or websites.

Purchases

Kalend’s only purchase is an optional tip — the coffee at the top of Settings. It unlocks nothing. The transaction is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We receive anonymised sales reports from Apple. We never see your payment details, and Apple does not give us your name, email address or billing information. The app keeps a count of the tips left on that device, to say thank you, and the count never leaves it.

Children

Kalend is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Because we collect no personal information from anyone, this is a statement of design rather than of policy enforcement.

Your rights

Under laws such as PIPEDA in Canada and the GDPR in the EU/UK, you have rights to access, correct and delete personal data held about you. Since we hold none, these rights are satisfied directly by you: your data is on your device and in your iCloud account, both fully under your control. Deleting the app and removing its data from iCloud (Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage) erases everything Kalend has created.

Data retention

We retain nothing, because we receive nothing. Your data persists exactly as long as you choose to keep it on your device or in your iCloud account.

Changes

If this policy changes we will update this page and revise the date above. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
