Nobody walks into a boxing gym for the first time feeling ready. The noise, the bags swinging, someone skipping like they were born doing it. Here is exactly what the first hour looks like, so the only surprise is how much you enjoy it.
Minutes 0–10: wraps and a warm-up
A coach wraps your hands with you — you will learn to do it yourself by week three. Then a warm-up: skipping (or a rope-less version), shoulder circles, a few easy rounds of shadowboxing.
Minutes 10–40: stance, feet, the jab
This is the part that matters. Where your feet go, where your hands live, and how to throw a jab that comes straight back. It is slow on purpose.
Hands up, chin down, and breathe out when you punch. That is most of boxing.

Minutes 40–60: the bag
Three-minute rounds on the heavy bag, one minute rest, exactly like a fight. Then stretching, water, and the slightly smug feeling of having done it.

Went to my first class on Monday after reading this. Exactly as described — including the smug feeling at the end.
Great to have you, Jordan. Wednesday’s fundamentals class is the perfect next step.
Do I need my own gloves for the first few weeks?
Nope — they lend you a pair. I bought mine after a month once I knew what size I liked.
