How it gets made

Fourteen days, one kettle

One person makes about eleven a day. This is what happens to each of them.

  1. Thrown

Every body is thrown by hand on the wheel, then left to dry slowly for nine days.

    Days 1 to 9

  2. Fired

Two firings: a bisque firing, then the glaze firing at 1,280°C, which makes it chip-resistant.

    Days 10 to 12

  3. Fitted

The copper element and thermostat go in by hand and get tested twice.

    Day 13

  4. Sent

Packed in moulded pulp with no plastic, and on its way within two days.

    Day 14

In their words

Letters from the kitchen

  • It boils quietly enough that I can hear the radio over it. That alone was worth it.

    MargotAsh glaze
  • I chipped the lid in the first month. They posted a new one the same week and asked for nothing.

    DevTenmoku glaze
  • It looks like it belongs on the table, not hidden next to the toaster.

Questions

Questions

Anything we have missed? The workshop answers every email.

Write to the workshop
Is it dishwasher safe?

The body is. The base with the element in it is not: wipe that with a damp cloth.

What happens if I chip it?

Send it back. We repair it, or replace the part at cost, for as long as we are still making them.

Will scale build up on stoneware?

Less than on steel, but in hard-water areas use one descaling tablet a month.

Why is it more expensive?

Because one person makes about eleven a day, and they are paid properly to do it.
