Who wrote this: we're The Big Head, an app studio in Edmonton. We make SmartFolio - Portfolio Tracker, which is listed first below. We've flagged it clearly and written its drawbacks the same way we wrote everyone else's — you can judge it against the rest on the details, and the other 9 are here because they're genuinely good.
This guide is for the investor whose holdings are scattered — a taxable account at one broker, a retirement account at another, maybe some crypto on an exchange — who wants one screen that adds it all up. Every app below is a real, currently live iPhone app aimed at that job.
Selection was deliberately narrow. Each App Store link was fetched and confirmed to resolve to a live listing under the exact app name claimed, and a second verification pass re-checked every one. Anything whose listing returned a 404 was dropped rather than patched with a guessed link — that removed Kubera and Empower's old standalone Personal Dashboard app. Features described here come from the App Store listings and vendor documentation; ratings, review counts and prices are left out on purpose, because they drift within weeks of publishing.
Disclosure: SmartFolio is our own app, built by The Big Head, and it is listed first because it is ours — not because it won a comparison. On the App Store the seller name reads 'Jashandeep Singh' rather than the studio name. It is a small independent app, and it does not do the one thing most of this list does: sync with your brokerage. That matters for the reader profile this guide is written for, so it is said plainly in its entry below.

The apps in detail
SmartFolio - Portfolio Tracker
Our app- Best for
- Investors who want precise FIFO cost-basis and tax-lot records kept entirely on their own device, and who don't mind entering trades by hand.
- Highlights
- Unlimited stocks across multiple portfolios
- Automatic FIFO tax-lot cost-basis calculation
- Realized, unrealized and total P&L with tax-year summaries and CSV export
- Face ID lock and multi-currency support
- Pricing
- Free
- Watch out
- There is no brokerage linking at all — every buy, sell, dividend and split is entered manually, which is exactly the chore a multi-brokerage investor is usually trying to escape. It also requires iOS or iPadOS 26.2 or later, so anyone a version behind cannot install it, and because everything is stored locally there is no web view to check your positions from a desktop.
Delta by eToro
- Best for
- Someone holding stocks and crypto across many venues who wants automatic syncing above all else.
- Highlights
- Syncs with 300+ exchanges, brokers and wallets
- Real-time tracking of stocks, crypto, ETFs, commodities and forex
- Price and movement alerts
- Allocation and performance analytics across 150+ currencies
- Pricing
- Free tier plus subscription
- Watch out
- It is owned by eToro, a broker — worth knowing when the app that shows you your portfolio is run by a company that would like to be your trading venue. The serious analytics and the higher connection limits sit behind the PRO and PRO+ tiers, so the free version works more as a viewer than as an analysis tool.
Snowball Analytics
- Best for
- The dividend-focused investor consolidating several brokerage accounts who wants real portfolio math rather than just a balance.
- Highlights
- Consolidates multiple brokerage accounts via direct integrations plus CSV import
- Dividend and coupon calendar with a payout-sustainability rating
- TWR, P/E, beta, Sharpe and Sortino metrics
- Fund X-ray, diversification analysis and returns net of broker commissions
- Pricing
- Free tier plus subscription
- Watch out
- The free plan tracks a single portfolio, so consolidation — the thing the app is genuinely best at — is a paid feature from the start. Brokers without a direct integration have to be brought in by CSV, which means maintaining a file by hand instead of a live connection.
getquin - Portfolio Tracker
- Best for
- Investors who want broad automatic account coverage and a net-worth picture that reaches well past equities.
- Highlights
- Automatic bank and broker connections, plus file and manual import
- Aggregated portfolio and net-worth view
- Tracks stocks, ETFs, funds, crypto, real estate, commodities and collectibles
- Dividend calendar with forecasting, plus a social layer
- Pricing
- Free tier plus subscription
- Watch out
- There is no native iPad app — on a tablet you are looking at a stretched iPhone layout. The account connections and the deeper analytics are gated behind the Premium and Wealth tiers, so the free account is closer to a manual tracker than to the aggregator the app is known for.
Stock Events Portfolio Tracker
- Best for
- Investors who care most about when things happen — dividends, ex-dates, earnings — across a wide global holdings list.
- Highlights
- Stocks, ETFs, funds, bonds, crypto and commodities across 50+ global exchanges
- Dividend calendar with ex-dates and payout history
- Earnings, dividend and IPO notifications
- Brokerage and wallet connections, home-screen widgets and custom price alerts
- Pricing
- Free tier plus subscription
- Watch out
- Most of what turns it from a calendar into a working tool — Excel and Google Sheets sync, the screener, calendar sync — is PRO-only, and there is a separate one-off 'Connect' purchase layered on top of the subscription. Working out what you actually have to buy takes longer than it should.
Empower
- Best for
- Someone who wants free, no-subscription aggregation of outside brokerage and retirement accounts into a single net-worth and allocation view.
- Highlights
- Links outside investment, brokerage and retirement accounts
- Net worth across every linked account
- Investment allocation analysis
- Retirement planning and scenario modeling
- Pricing
- Free
- Watch out
- The standalone Empower Personal Dashboard app — the one many people still call Personal Capital — was retired, and its App Store listing now returns a 404. Everything has been folded into this retirement-first app, which is a different product with different priorities. It is also an aggregator rather than an investing ledger: you get balances, allocation and net worth, never tax lots or cost-basis reporting. It is free because Empower sells advisory services.
Monarch: Budget & Track Money
- Best for
- The investor who wants brokerage balances sitting beside budgeting and full household net worth, shared with a partner.
- Highlights
- Connects bank, investment and loan accounts
- Investments shown separately from cash
- Customizable dashboard with net worth and investment performance
- Transaction-level drill-down and a bill calendar
- Pricing
- Subscription
- Watch out
- This is a budgeting app that also happens to hold your investments. You get balances and performance, not tax lots, cost-basis reporting or a dividend calendar. And there is no meaningful free tier to sit on while you decide — it is a subscription from the outset.
Yahoo Finance: Stocks, Markets
- Best for
- Investors who want brokerage-linked portfolios bundled with the broadest free news and market data.
- Highlights
- Brokerage account linking for a unified portfolio view
- Transaction entry and cost-basis tools
- Crypto, ETF, bond, commodity, currency and index coverage
- Custom watchlists and interactive charts with technical indicators
- Pricing
- Free tier plus subscription
- Watch out
- Brokerage linking runs through Yodlee, and per Yahoo's own help documentation Yodlee collects and transmits your holdings and balances and stores your credentials so it can refresh them. Yahoo says it does not hold those credentials itself, but a third party does — and linking is the main reason to choose this over a plain watchlist app, so the trade-off is hard to avoid.
Simply Wall St
- Best for
- The long-term investor who wants research and valuation work on the holdings they already own.
- Highlights
- Visual company analysis reports with intrinsic-valuation views
- Portfolio import with performance and dividend-health analysis
- Insider buying and selling signals plus earnings breakdowns
- Multiple watchlists and 'Narratives' for tracking a per-stock thesis
- Pricing
- Free tier plus subscription
- Watch out
- Brokerage syncing exists but is restricted to the paid plans, so on the free tier you are entering or importing holdings yourself. It is a research and valuation product first: there is no tax-lot or cost-basis reporting, which makes it a companion to a tracker rather than a replacement for one.
What's still missing
Two apps were researched and deliberately left out because their App Store listings could not be verified: Kubera (both candidate listing IDs return 404, with no reachable US listing) and the standalone Empower Personal Dashboard app (listing retired, returns 404). No substitute or reconstructed link was used in either case. Note also that there are two unrelated products called SmartFolio — a Pakistan Stock Exchange tracker at smart-folio.app with no iOS app, and smartfolio.com — and none of their features (broker coverage, Shariah screening, AI coaching) belong to the app listed here.
Common questions
Do I actually need a tracker that links to my brokerage?
It depends on how often you trade. If you buy a few positions a year, manual entry takes minutes and keeps your account credentials out of a third party's hands — that is the case for SmartFolio or a spreadsheet. If you hold dozens of positions across several brokers, or you trade regularly, manual entry falls apart quickly and an app with real syncing (Delta, getquin, Snowball, Monarch, Yahoo Finance) will save you the reconciliation work.
What happened to Empower Personal Dashboard, the old Personal Capital app?
The standalone app was retired and its App Store listing now returns a 404, which is why it does not appear in this guide. Its account-aggregation and net-worth features live on inside the main Empower app listed above. If you are looking for a closer replacement to the old experience rather than a retirement-first app, getquin and Monarch are the nearest equivalents for aggregation, and Snowball Analytics is the better fit if you mainly want portfolio analytics.
Which of these handle cost basis and tax lots properly?
Few of them do. SmartFolio calculates FIFO tax lots and produces tax-year summaries with CSV export, Yahoo Finance offers transaction entry with cost-basis tools, and Sharesight's web platform is built around long-run return and tax reporting. The budgeting-first apps — Monarch and Empower — show balances and performance but never tax lots, so they will not help at tax time.
Is it safe to link a brokerage account to a tracking app?
These apps do not connect to your broker directly; they use aggregators such as Yodlee, Plaid or SnapTrade. Yahoo's own help documentation states that Yodlee stores your credentials so it can refresh your holdings, which is typical of the model. Access is generally read-only, but you are extending trust to a company you did not choose. If that is not a trade you want to make, a manual tracker that keeps data on the device is the honest alternative.
Can one app track stocks and crypto in the same portfolio?
Yes. Delta syncs crypto exchanges and wallets alongside brokerages, getquin covers crypto plus real estate and commodities, and Stock Events handles crypto next to stocks, ETFs, bonds and funds. Apps built around equity research or budgeting — Simply Wall St, Monarch, Sharesight — treat crypto as a secondary concern at best.
Are the free tiers good enough to live on?
Usually not, and it is worth knowing where the wall is before you invest hours of setup. Snowball's free plan covers one portfolio, Sharesight's free web plan allows one portfolio and ten holdings, Simply Wall St keeps brokerage syncing on paid plans, and getquin gates account connections behind Premium. The genuinely free options here are Empower, which is free because it sells advisory services, and SmartFolio, which is free because it does everything on your own device.
